Ernst Heinrich Roth, Bubenreuth, 1957

Ernst Heinrich Roth began his firm in the early 1900’s, making high quality instruments in response to lesser German exports of the time. Fine materials and careful workmanship resulted in excellent reproductions of the best Italian instruments, and eventually Ernst Heinrich II moved to America to import them. Roth I passed in 1948 and in 1953, the son moved the firm to Bubenreuth.

This is a wonderful representation of the firm’s work: despite the fact that it was played on for many years by an aspiring professional, its condition is almost pristine, with a signature rich, full tone. There are a fair number of Roth violins in circulation from that early period, but very few cellos.

A truly lovely instrument.
